At the end of March non essential businesses across Tameside were told to close as part of the government’s strategy to control the virus. Almost three months and a large percentage of businesses have now re-opened, with restaurants, hospitality, hairdressers and others soon to follow it is hoped.
One of the biggest concentrations of independent businesses in the borough is Ashton-under-Lyne and we spoke to some of those businesses that have reopened in a rather different environment from the time they closed.
Cheryl Mellor from Dizzi Gothic “It will be great to see all my customers again and we have new stock in the shop. We’ve taken precautions to protect customers with screen and shield face masks which we also sell. For the time being I will also just be opening Wednesday to Saturday.”
Spencer Grady from Grade A Jewellery “Yes it’s great to be back open again and seeing the customers coming back in. Hopefully, we can get back to normality now and continue with jewellery repairs and also to buy scrap gold, it’s a good time to sell with the price being quite buoyant.”
Deborah Turner from New Shu “It’s fabulous to be back in action on Market Avenue at the shop with all the shoes and sandals for summer. We have all the hygiene precautions in place so you can shop safely too so we look forward to seeing you soon.”
Julie Kelly from Sincerely Yours “We are back open for all your birthday cards, gifts and balloons so please come and support your local shops.”
Elaine Roberts from Knits & Pieces “Although we have reopened the shop you can still order online where we offer free local delivery in Tameside. You can even click and collect so pop in it will be great to see you.”
Aneesha Janiqbal from Jasmine Tea Rooms “We are currently open for take away at our family run café that sells cakes, coffees, teas and snacks so please give us your support.”
Naheed Ghafoor from Rouge Fabrics “It’s good to be back and we have lots of fabrics in stock for those crafts projects, dresses and home furnishings. We’d like to thank our customers for giving their support and at the moment we are opening Wednesday through to Saturday.”
Alf Hallworth from Harrington & Hallworth “It’s great to see our clients again because they are the ones who have kept us going all these years. Some are like friends and pop in to see us and we’ve really missed that. It’s been wonderful to be back open again and we’ve been busy to make sure our clients are safe when they shop with us.”
Val Unwin from Decisions “It’s really good to be open again and it was nice to welcome customers on the first week we opened. Independent businesses make our town what it is offering unique products and services. I hope people will get back into the habit of shopping in Ashton again because ASHTON IS OPEN.”
