Droylsden,  News

Stefan Dean is probably more recognisable in Tameside when he costumes as Captain America at various events. However, the Droylsden dad has also amassed an incredible collection of autographs and props over the years meeting some really big star names. We chatted to Stefan to find out when he started collecting.

When I went to my first convention in 2005 – Collectormania in Milton Keynes.

James Marsters (Spike from Buffy ) I think was the first, but I also met Alan Cummings ( Nightcrawler from Xmen) at that same event and a couple of others.

So, over the years how many have you collected?

Wow! Too many to count, probably a few hundred.

Is it an expensive hobby?

It is now! Conventions used to be fairly cheap and didn’t have MASSIVE guests, and the bigger guests would be about £30 for autographs and possibly have a photo op set because it would take too long for everyone to get a photo whilst getting an autograph, the lesser guests would be £15-20 for an autograph and get a pic for free at the table with them. Now the lesser guests are £20-30, and every guest is usually paid photo op or have to pay for a selfie now, and the entry costs have gone up so these days its VERY expensive.

Stefan meets Dolph Lundgren and Kiefer Sutherland

What was the hardest autograph to get?

None of them are hard really at a convention but I would say Kiefer Sutherland, his was pricey and very limited because he could only attend for 3hrs due to having a gig the night before and that same day so sold out very quick.

And you also get involved with celebrity events?

I am part of the set up team for An Experience With, who host high end black tie dinner events with stars like Arnold Schwarzenegger, Sylvester Stallone, Jean Claude Van Damme, Al Pacino, Robert DeNiro etc. We have Mel Gibson coming up in December all being well with the world by then hopefully.

Stefan with his brother meet Sylvester Stallone and Stefan shows some of his prop collection.

In addition to autographs you also have some original film props?

Yes, I got into collecting screen used and production made movie props about 2yrs ago now, that is a VERY expensive world and you have to be very careful and do a lot of research and know who to buy from etc. But you can also find some nice affordable little pieces occasionally.

What’s the prize of your collection?

It was my screen worn Arnold Schwarzenegger costume and gloves from End of Days but I recently acquired some production made design items from the ultimately cancelled Friday the 13th tv series that was being planned in 2016.

Is there a particular autograph that you would like for your collection?

Yes, a personalised Arnold Schwarzenegger End of Days picture or poster to go with my screen worn items.

Thanks, Stefan, for chatting with About Tameside.
